12 Man Tent
What to look for when buying a 12 man tent. You need to decide what is important before you buy.
First check the Capacity is actually 12 persons
This may seem obvious but it pays to be certain.
Colour coded poles
Have you ever tried to put a computer together with all black cables? It’s a pain in the rear! Tents are no different. Make life easier on yourself and either choose a tent that has few poles which is difficult with a 12 man tent, or choose one with colour coded poles which will make your life so much easier when putting your tent up.
Hook for lantern with cable fixture
This is a great idea for larger tents as when you have the whole family or large group going in an out it makes life simple.
Organiser pockets
Not necessary, however a great to have for the organised group!
Mosquito mesh on the sleeping pods
Heaven! Unless you are one of those lucky people who don’t get eaten alive this is a huge asset to any tent. Especially if you are going to a different area as mosquito’s where you are might not eat you but others may (believe me I know).
Fire-retardant material
Safety is always important especially if you are taking children with you. If you have fire retardant materials this will help reduce serious accidents if someone does something silly. Of course still observe all safety instructions on fire prevention.
Water column: 1,200mm to 5,000 mm
The water column is very important. It describes the strength and quality of coating of your tent. The higher the water column of your tent the better it is as the water resistant coating is better. Obviously this effects the price but its best not to be miserable and wet especially if taking children with you. A tent is accepted as waterproof at 1,200 mm (47.2″). However it becomes clear that it is better to have much higher than this once it rains!
Taped seams
This is always a good idea as this helps strengthen the tent against water seepage.
Tent Materials
These vary, however these days if you choose a higher quality tent you will have great materials. You can have polyester, PU coated materials. Check to see if yours is breathable as this will help prevent condensation and feel much better.
Measurements
Check your measurements as not all tents are equal when it comes to height and space.
Check the overall measurements
Then you individual Pod Measurements
Then the overall tent Weight and pack size
Colour
Check your tents colour. This may not be important to some people, but vitally important for others. Also a tents colour can change the feel of the tent and how much light you get inside so its not just about preference but can have a practical intent.
So now you should have a better idea of many of the things to check out before you buy your 12 man tent and which ones you consider to be more important than others.
